Announcement of the Women's ODI World Cup Squad

On August 19, India will unveil its 15-member squad for the Women's ODI World Cup during a press conference in Mumbai. The selection committee, led by Neetu David, faces several critical decisions, particularly regarding Shafali Verma's recent performance, Renuka Thakur's fitness status, and the overall middle-order structure.

Press Conference Details

The BCCI's Women's Senior Team selection committee will reveal the squad for both the Women’s ODI World Cup and the ODI series against Australia. Neetu David, the chief selector, along with captain Harmanpreet Kaur, will address the media at the BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai.

India's World Cup Journey Begins

India will kick off its World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on September 30. The team recently secured victories in the white-ball series against England and triumphed in a tri-series held in Sri Lanka. As the squad announcement approaches, several pressing questions linger among fans and analysts.

Shafali Verma's Inclusion in Question

A significant point of discussion is whether Shafali Verma will be included in the squad. After her last ODI match against New Zealand in October 2024, she has struggled with form and was subsequently dropped. In her absence, Pratika Rawal has excelled, scoring 703 runs, including a century and five fifties, at an impressive average of 54.07 in 14 matches since her debut against the West Indies.

Selectors' Dilemma: Experience vs. Current Form

With Pratika's outstanding performance, selectors face a tough choice between reinstating Shafali Verma or continuing to support Pratika Rawal's consistent batting. In the recent India A ODI series against Australia, Shafali showed flashes of her explosive talent with scores of 36, 4, and 52, but her overall consistency remains a concern.

Renuka Thakur's Fitness Concerns

Following Jhulan Goswami's retirement, Renuka Thakur has been expected to lead the pace attack. She boasts a commendable record in ODIs with 35 wickets at an average of 22.02. However, she has been sidelined since December 2024 due to a back stress fracture. Reports suggest she is on the mend, but selectors are cautious about her fitness ahead of the World Cup.

Amonjot Kaur's Role in the Squad

Amonjot Kaur has emerged as a dependable seam bowling all-rounder, especially with Pooja Vastrakar out due to injury. In the T20I series against England, Amonjot took three wickets and scored an unbeaten 63 runs in one match. Although she missed some ODIs due to injury, she has been cleared to resume bowling soon.

Need for a Genuine Wrist Spinner

India currently lacks a true wrist spinner. While Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, and Radha Yadav are capable spinners, none can consistently turn the ball both ways. The selectors may consider Prema Rawat, who excelled during the India A tour of Australia, taking seven wickets in five matches.

Balancing the Batting Line-Up

With Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Richa Ghosh likely securing spots in the top six, the middle-order remains uncertain. Amanjot Kaur's fitness is a concern, prompting selectors to consider backup options like Pooja Vastrakar or Harleen Deol to ensure stability throughout the World Cup.
